World map outline across upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline of the world map covers the upper back, showing the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia with simple, unshaded contours. The linework is even and clean, with small islands drawn as tiny dots. The ink is a single dark tone against warm skin, and the frame is shot from behind, with a black lace bra strap visible at the left edge.

The Bramleys were dropping faster than we could catch them, so Grandad sent me up the ladder with the last of the Discovery tucked in my apron and a carpenter's pencil behind one ear. From up there the whole orchard ran down to the brook in rows, the grass between them gone the colour of old tea, and he stood below with a crate lid balanced on his knee, sketching in the late light as if the trees were a map he had already finished.

He had a school atlas from 1958 with its cover gone, and every evening after supper he redrew the world on the underside of a crate lid, from memory, squinting at the spine. The Americas went on first, then Africa with its hard elbow, and the islands he left until last. Each one got a dot no bigger than a pip. 'Islands are the easy bit,' he told me. 'Coast's where it gets argumentative. You just trust the sea to hold still.'
I asked him once why he never went to see any of it. He said he had been to Ostend on a coach in 1971 and found it damp, and that a man with a bad knee could cover more ground with a pencil than any ferry ever would. The apples went to Birmingham every Thursday. The map stayed in the barn where it stayed dry, and he said that was the only sensible way to keep a thing.
The lid split in the winter after he died, straight down the middle of the Pacific. I found it under a tarpaulin in March and sat with it on my knees, tracing the coast of Africa with my thumb until the pencil smudged grey across my skin. Then I took the carpenter's pencil from my ear, found the one island he had never got round to, and made a dot for it, small as a pip, somewhere off the edge of the wood where the sea was supposed to be.
