Twin sailing ship tattoos on thighs

Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the upper thighs of a person wearing denim shorts, with a mirrored pair of tattoos. Each design shows a sailing ship with full sails inside an oval frame, surrounded by flowers, clouds, a rope border, a ship's wheel and a large rose at the base. The bold, even linework has no visible shading, and the strong red colour cast of the photo makes the ink look dark and monochrome.

Sit yourself nearer the range, and mind the cat, she's been eyeing that chair since Martinmas. Now, my grandfather never once in his life saw the sea, not properly, though he worked forty winters on the land above Whitby and swore he could smell salt when the wind came round from the north. He had a brother, Tom, who went to sea at fourteen on a barque called the Constance Rowe, and who came home once with a rose pricked into his forearm by a man in Valparaíso who wanted paying for it in tobacco.

Tom never came back to the farm for good. He sent letters with pressed flowers tucked inside, and once a painted tin with a ship on the lid, sails full as a sow's belly. Grandfather kept that tin on the windowsill through the whole of the war, and every morning before he lit the stove he turned it so the ship faced the door, as if she were waiting to be sailed out of it.

The winter the letters stopped, the snow came down so thick the lane disappeared and the ewes had to be dug out with spades. Grandfather walked the boundary fence every day for six weeks. On the last morning of the thaw he found the tin standing open on the gatepost, empty, and beside it a tarred rope knot, tied neat the way Tom had taught him when he was four years old. He never said what it meant. He just went in and put the kettle on.
