Twisted tree with roots down a limb

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed tree with a gnarled, twisting trunk and a full canopy at the top rises from the skin and its roots trail down the length of the limb. The linework is fine and dark, with soft shading on the trunk and foliage that gives the tree depth. The black and white photograph uses a shallow focus and dark vignette, so the skin texture and tattoo are the clear focus.

The rain had found its way under the tarpaulin again by ten, pooling in the dip of the trestle table, and Ruth Pardoe was still lifting pots out of the wet when the boy came back for the third time that morning. He had a carrier bag in one hand and a cutting wrapped in damp newspaper in the other, and he wanted to know if the old juniper on the end was dead, because it had been leaning over the gutter since August.

She had wired that tree into its wind-bent shape twenty-two years ago, when her husband still sold fish on the far side of the market and the pitch had a proper roof. Every spring since, the trunk had tilted a finger's width further toward the drain, and its roots had pushed through the drainage hole in the base of the pot like fingers feeling for a door. "It's not dead," she told him. "It's just going somewhere." He didn't understand, and she didn't try to explain. She gave him a pound back from the coins in his palm and a sprig of rosemary for free.

When the stalls began to pack up at four, she tipped the juniper toward the light and found that the roots had gone down the table leg, over the lip of the gutter and into the running water, silver and branching in the grey afternoon. The canopy above stayed dry under the tarp, green as a held breath. Ruth stood in the drizzle with her hands in her pockets and watched the rain carry the tree's thin white threads down the slope toward the river, and she decided, for once, to leave it to find its own way.
