Rain had been coming off the river since six, and Tomasz had given up trying to keep the tarpaulin tight over the back of his stall at Lower Marsh. The orchids didn't mind. They sat in black plastic pots with their roots curled over the rims like pale fingers, and he worked along the row lifting each one to check the drainage holes, the way Halina used to check a chicken for stray feathers before it went in the oven.

The man who stopped at the end of the row had a wet dog on a lead and a cardboard tray of coffees balanced on one hand. He wanted the moth orchid on the bottom shelf, the one with seven blooms and two unopened buds at the tip. 'Cut me a stem,' he said, 'and I'll buy the vase too.' Tomasz shook his head. Cut stems last a fortnight. A plant in a pot will last a summer if you let it drink once a week and leave it alone. He wrapped it in newspaper, wrote the watering days on the back of a receipt, and charged him the price of a coffee.

For nine days nothing happened, and Tomasz stopped thinking about it. Then on the Saturday the man came back with the dog, rain running off his hood, and set the pot on the stall without a word. The two buds had opened somewhere in a dark hallway. Each bloom was a grey fold of petal, lit from one side. 'Halina called that one the Hussar,' Tomasz said before he could stop himself. 'Stands to attention.' The man laughed and asked what she had been like. Tomasz lifted the corner of the tarpaulin, let the water run off it in a rope, and said she would have liked him.
