Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo shows two bird silhouettes facing each other on a thin branch with several leaves. The solid black ink has smooth, simple edges with no shading, and the branch trails off to the right. The foot rests on a pale background, with the tattoo placed near the ankle bone.

The wind off the bay had stiffened the nets again, and Nell had three more to mend before the tide turned. She worked on the harbour wall with her back to the town, knotting by feel, because her eyes kept going to the willow growing out of a crack in the seawall.

Two linnets had nested in that willow every spring since the wall was built, and every dusk the pair sat on the bare branch that leaned out over the water, the cock facing the hen, the last leaves thinning around them. Old Mother Pell said they were keeping an account. Nell's brother Jory had sailed with the Mary Ann in October, and the account, Pell said, was not yet settled.

The Mary Ann did not come back with the autumn gales. Nell went down to the wall each evening anyway, with the nets across her knees, and watched the birds settle their small quarrels over who would keep the branch. Some nights the hen flew off and the cock sat alone, and Nell felt the cold in her own chest and resented the willow for its patience.

In late November a lamp showed on the far headland, and the Mary Ann came round the point with one sail patched in red. Nell dropped the net. Above her the two linnets had returned to the branch, one on either side of its last leaf, bills almost touching. She understood then that they had never needed the branch to hold them. They had only been waiting for someone to look up. She tied off the last knot and left the nets where they lay.
