The rain has finally stopped and the orchard is steaming like a kettle, so I thought I'd write before the bees come back to the hive by the wall. You will laugh, but Mr Pryce has had the bench under the medlar re-varnished at last, and he's had the old words cut back in, the ones his late wife chose. Heaven is a place on earth with you. I told him it was a song lyric, and he said that was rather the point of a bench.

I've been thinking about it since the men left. Forty years I have pricked out seedlings in this county and never once sat down in the middle of a working day, and yet there I was yesterday, knees muddy, a flask of tea going cold, reading those letters over and over as if they might rearrange themselves into a sermon.

Then the boy from the college, Callum, asked me straight out whether I believed it. I said I believed in compost and good drainage. He didn't laugh. He just pressed a sprig of rosemary into my palm and went back to the potting shed whistling.

So I'm writing to say I'm coming up on the train at Easter, and I'd like cuttings from your damson for the wall. Bring the good secateurs. Bring yourself too, if you can spare the time from being so busy being happy.
