Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand and wrist show a small, solid black silhouette of an airplane. The simple outline has no shading and is set against bare skin. The plain, pale grey background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Put your coppers away and sit on the edge of the cart, the lamps are lit and the Wheel won't turn till I've finished. You've all seen the little tin bird that hangs above the Dodgems. Old Sammy Penrose hung it there himself, the summer he came back from the north with nothing in his pockets but a cough and a drawing of an aeroplane.

He'd been sweeping the rides since he was nine. Every evening he stood at the edge of the field with one hand up, watching the lights of the big machines blink over the river, far too high for anyone to wave at. His mother used to say you could read a boy by where he held his wrist when he was thinking. Sammy held his palm open to the sky, as if he could catch something coming down.

One night in September the fog rolled in off the water and the whole fair went still. A bulb popped, the Waltzer slowed to a groan, and a small grey shape slid out of the murk, low over the hoopla tent, wings dipping. Nobody saw it land. The men said it was only a kite caught in the wires, but Sammy had the string in his fist before anyone could stop him, and he never let it go.

He hung that bird above the Dodgems the next morning and told the rest of us to keep one hand raised whenever the sky went quiet. Thirty years on, the Penrose boys still do it, and when you see them standing at the edge of the field with their palms turned up, you'll know they're waiting for something to come home.
