Mrs Abernathy's cats had never once come when called, which was why the boy from the mill was surprised to find them waiting at the stile at dusk, one either side of the path, tails wrapped neatly around their feet. Red collars, buckled tight. Nobody in Fenwick Hollow owned cats that clean.

"They're not mine," she said when he asked, and went back to pegging out sheets. "They belong to the pond in the wood. Go and see what's floating in it."

He went, because he was twelve and it was almost dark, and the cats, when he looked back, had already followed him at a distance of exactly two strides. In the clearing the pond was ringed with reeds, and in its middle, where there should have been nothing but black water, a lotus had opened, its layered petals going green at the edges and pink at the heart. At its centre a six-pointed star turned slowly, and inside the star a small pale mark glowed like a struck match.

He reached for it. The cats sat down on either side of him, the way they sat on the church wall during evensong, and neither looked at him at all. They looked at the water and waited, as though he were the one who had to decide something. He left the star where it was. Walking home, he noticed the cats had stopped following, and that the stile was no longer where he remembered it.
