Knotwork vine with coloured flowers on upper back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A black linework tattoo of looping vines and knotted, interlaced curls forms a rounded cluster across the upper back. Small flowers in red, yellow, blue and teal sit among the vines, with a tiny heart and a butterfly near the lower right edge. The black lines are bold and even, and the colour is limited to the flowers against plain skin.

Mairead had tied the first knot in the orchard wall the spring her husband's boat went out and did not come back, and she had never once untied it. Now the vines had climbed past the gate and thickened into a lattice no one could walk through without ducking, and the village children dared each other to touch the little red flowers that opened in May, though everyone knew they were only bramble-blossom, sour and useless.

Her grandson Tomas came up the hill with a tin of lime wash and a question he had clearly been rehearsing on the stairs. The council wanted the wall cleared for the new car park. He stood at the gate, sleeves rolled, and told her the knotwork would have to come down, all of it, by Friday.

She did not argue. She took him round the back, where the oldest loop still held a rusted hook, and showed him the heart she had pressed into the mortar with her thumb forty years ago, small enough to hide under a sparrow. Beside it was a butterfly, cut so thin he had to tilt his head to find it. Each flower, she told him, was a different person who had come up the hill to ask her something and stayed for tea.

Tomas went back down without the lime wash. On Friday the council man found a wall of vines still standing, a note pinned to the gate in careful capitals: TAKE THE CAR PARK ELSEWHERE. Nobody ever learned who had cut the path through the thicket so neatly that morning, or why the blue flower by the wall had been picked and set on the sill of the cottage, still fresh.
