Fishing hook on the top of a foot
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A fishing hook with a barbed point and a wisp of line curls across the top of a foot, running from near the ankle towards the toes. The hook is rendered with soft, three-dimensional shading and dark outlines, with blue-grey highlights along the shank. The composition is a close, angled view of the foot against a pale background.

The line came up out of the Medway at slack water, grey and slick as wet string, and Ottoline was the one who saw the hook. It was still clenched in the end of it, barbed and bright along the shank where the tide had worn it smooth. Nobody on the wall has made a hook like that since before the drowning. We make very little now. We salvage, mostly, and we pretend we are not hoping for something more.

My grandmother had one rule about line: never cut what you cannot follow to its end. So we followed it. It ran east along the old sea wall, past the pylon stumps and the rusted swings of the Strood ferry landing, then climbed the tilted lawn of what had once been a bowling green. Gulls lifted off the railings as we passed. Ottoline kept a hand on the line the whole way, feeling for weight, and I kept my eyes on the water, which was the colour of an old bruise going yellow at the edges.
At the top of the green the line ran under a hatch set into the ground, its wheel seized solid for years. We turned it together. Below was a dry stairwell, and at its foot a brass ship's bell hung from a bracket on the wall, the line knotted tight around its yoke. Someone had rung it last a long time ago. The clapper was wrapped in fishing line, and the name on the rim read MARGARET ELLIS, the same name as the ledger my grandmother kept under her bed.
I stood there with river water dripping off my sleeves and understood she had been waiting for someone to follow the line. Ottoline asked if we should take the bell down. I said no, leave it hanging. Some things are only useful while they are still caught.
