Dear Tom, the tide has been wrong all week. The boats come in early and sit low in the water, and Mrs Pascoe at the chandlery says it's the moon pulling harder than it should, though she says that about most things. I have started going down to the harbour wall after supper to see for myself. There are two moons up there now, one bright crescent on the east side and another lower, almost touching it, as though one of them has leaned in to listen.

I told the lads at the pier that I'd seen the pair of them kissing, and Eddie Lowe laughed until he had to sit on a bollard. But I wasn't joking. The lower one has a face turned to the upper one, eyes half shut, and the curls on either side look like the ribbons your mother used to tie to the gate. The stars scatter round them like someone spilt a tin of tacks. I counted nineteen last night before the cloud came over and took them.
If you're still at sea when this reaches the post, look for them on the nights you're on watch. I'll be on the wall at ten, same as always, with the lamp unlit so they can see the sky. Bring the good tin of tea when you come home. Mind the swell off the Skerries, and don't let Eddie talk you into his card game.
