Swirling flourish with a star
Black and grey · Flash
A black flourish design made of curling scrolls and tapering swirls that sweep from left to right and end in a solid five-pointed star with a white inner star. Fine dots are scattered along the scrolls, and the strokes vary in thickness to suggest movement. The design is shown in solid black ink on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

The Queen of Vellaria wanted her name written across the night sky, and the court penman was the only man who could do it. Master Aldous Quill had spent forty winters practising his loops on slate, and by the time I was apprenticed to him his hand could run a line from the harbour tower to the eastern hills without lifting the nib.

He took me to the roof of the observatory on the first frosty evening of the month. He dipped a brush in soot and gum arabic, and the ink ran in long strokes that thinned as they climbed and curled back on themselves like fern fronds. Every curl was a word he had not yet decided on. Then he blew a fine spray from a hollow quill, and the air filled with specks that settled on the strokes and stayed there, bright as salt.
The Queen's chamberlain came up the stairs to demand the finished name. Aldous only pointed. The flourish had reached the sky and stopped at a single point of light, which he had drawn himself: five sharp edges, filled solid so that anyone looking up from the wharves would find it first. 'A name is only the start of a sentence,' he said. 'Stars are what you put at the end, so people know where to look.'
We never finished the word. When I climbed to the roof the next morning, the flourish was still there, pale in the dew, and the chamberlain had gone. Aldous's brush lay in the gutter, and the star was catching the sun. I still have that brush. The dust from the quill has never fully left the sky above Vellaria, and on clear nights the scrolls are still there if you know which way to look.
