Two dogs in a yin yang circle
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows two stocky dogs, a pale pug at the top and a dark French bulldog below, arranged in a yin yang composition inside a circle. The dogs are outlined in clean black linework with small dot and stipple detail on the faces and bodies. The black half of the circle is solid ink with fine white highlight strokes, and the white half is left open against a plain white background.

The vicar had asked for someone sensible to carry the rings, so the cushion went to Biscuit, a pale pug with a face like a disappointed magistrate, and the bride's brother was given the other end of the lead. Nobody thought to ask Smudge, the French bulldog, who had been asleep under the registrar's table since the cake was cut and felt, quite reasonably, that the afternoon had been arranged without him.

I was on tea urns that day, so I saw it all through the kitchen hatch. Biscuit went one way round the trestle tables and Smudge went the other, and every time they met by the urn they stopped to sniff each other with great seriousness, then carried on as if they had signed a treaty. By the second speech they had worn a loop into the carpet, a flattened ring that from the doorway looked like a wheel with its spokes filed off.
When the speeches finished, the bride's uncle dropped a bag of crisps and both dogs arrived at the same spot at once, the cushion lying on the floor between them. Biscuit lay down on the left, all pale belly and chin. Smudge curled in on the right with his ears folded flat. Between them they made the shape I had only ever seen on my nan's brooch, one white curve nested against one black, each with a small dot of the other at its heart.
Nobody moved them. The bride came over in her heels, looked down at the pair of them and said it was the first thing all day that had gone exactly to plan. Then she slipped the rings into her pocket, left the cushion where it was, and asked me for a cup of tea, milk first.
