The two dragons lived under the bakehouse floor, in the cold cellar where the flour was kept. Long ago, the story goes, they had both wanted the same sword, a plain blade a smith in the valley had made and then forgotten. They fought over it until the millstream ran dark and the wheel stopped. Then the smith's widow came down the steps with a basket of bread, set it between them, and asked what they were fighting for. Neither could say, so they agreed to share the sword and the warmth of the oven, one head turned to each side.

Each morning now they creak and clatter, and Ada hears them settle. Once the loaves are in, the cellar goes quiet, and the heat rises through the floorboards in a slow curve, like a creature curled around something it means to keep. She drew the first batch out grey with dawn. Every loaf that morning had a split across its top in the shape of a heart, which her grandmother had never managed and which Ada had never once tried to make.
