Lotus and crescent flash design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a stylised lotus bloom at the top, its petals filled with patterned bands, flanked by two curving leaf sprigs and a single leaf beneath it. Below sits a wide crescent with radiating hatched lines and a symmetrical mandala-like motif at its centre. The design uses bold black outlines and fine line hatching on a plain white background, with no colour.

The lamp-keeper's boy had already fled down the eastern stair when the wick guttered, so it fell to me, Ansu, who had trimmed the moon-bowls for nineteen years and never once been asked to climb past the second landing. Tamar, the priest of the crescent shrine, stood with her back to me, her hands folded into her sleeves as if the cold had got into them.

The shrine was built in the shape of the moon's horn, the old men said, so that the god could rest his chin in it. Its floor was inlaid with a mandala of blue reed-stone, and at its centre sat a bronze bowl cut like a lotus bud. Oil poured into the petals and rose through the wick at the tip. I had seen it lit every month since I was a child, but never seen it dark. I knelt, scraped the crust from the spout with my thumbnail, and poured fresh oil from the jar I had carried up with my heart knocking against it.
The wick caught on the third try. Tamar let out a breath I think she had been holding since the solstice. "Your hands are steady," she said. "Why?" I told her I had mended nets with my father until the river took him, and a badly knotted net lets every fish through. She laughed, which I had not expected, and said the god had never minded knots so long as the light went up.
We stood a while watching the flame climb the petals and spill down the crescent's edges, lighting the leaf-sprigs carved beneath the rim until they seemed to grow out of the dark. Then she gave me the jar, the key, and the last word of the night: keep the bowl full, and it will keep the river. I went down the stair with my palms warm and did not once look back at the light.
