The lift in Calder House has been dead since March, so you climb the fourteen flights with shopping bags knocking against your shins, counting landings out loud the way you did when you were small enough to be carried. Nobody carries anything in this block any more. The stairwell smells of bleach and somebody's Sunday curry, and on every landing the same mural watches you pass, painted by kids from the youth club in a teal that has since gone the colour of dishwater.

On the eighth floor two elephants walk through the grey light from the window. The big one leads, ears spread like sails, and the small one keeps close against its flank with its trunk looped over the bigger one's back, as if making sure it doesn't wander off. You used to stop there and tell your brother they were heading for the shops. He said they were heading for the bins. You never agreed on a destination, only that neither of them ever once looked back at the stairs.

Tonight the lift light flickers on as you pass, a small cough of hope, and you keep walking anyway. On the ninth landing you stop, because the small elephant has faded almost to nothing, bleached by years of sun through the glass, while the big one still stands dark and solid. You press your palm flat to the paint where its ear used to be. The wall is warm, the boiler pipe behind it knocking like something wanting out.

Then you hitch the bags higher and climb on, because somebody has to reach the top, and the small one has already decided to follow.
