Three feathers with swirls on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three feathers in descending diagonal arrangement, one grey-shaded at the top, one solid black with a stippled tip in the centre, and one textured with fine hatched barbs at the bottom. Fine, flowing linework forms curling swirls and small floating quills around the feathers. The image is a close-up of bare skin on the ribs, with the design filling the centre of the frame against a warm, neutral background.

The hall at St Aldhelm's still smells of floor polish and the squash that tasted of cardboard in 1998. Dev is already by the urn, wearing a lanyard with a name that is not the one you remember, and he holds out his hand as though you were eleven and about to be dared. You shake it. Behind him the tuck shop hatch has been boarded over, and a projector throws grainy photographs of the quad onto a screen that keeps flickering.

Three of you used to meet at the pond behind the science block, where a grey drake nested under the willow every spring. You each pulled a feather from the same bird on the same afternoon and swore a pact that the feather would bring whoever held it back if ever one of you needed it. Dev kept his in a pencil case. Priya tucked hers inside a library book she never returned. Yours disappeared into the lining of your coat and was almost certainly lost somewhere on the 73 bus.
Priya comes in late, hair cropped, holding a paper cup and a grievance. She says the library book is still in her loft, twenty-six years overdue, and the feather is there, flattened but whole, its barbs combed by age into a fine grey hatch. Dev sits down on a plastic chair so hard it creaks. You ask whether the pact still counts. Nobody answers, so you walk out past the stacked chairs and the dinner ladies' cupboard, down to the pond, which is smaller than you remember and has no ducks at all.
Under the willow Priya unzips her bag and the library book falls open. The feather slides out, turns once in the air, and lands face up between your three pairs of shoes, its curl pointing the way back toward the hall.
