Two geckos on the upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two gecko silhouettes are tattooed on the upper back, one above the other, with the lower gecko's tail curving downwards. The figures are filled with solid dark ink with little visible internal detail, and the lines are smooth. The image is a warm-toned close view of bare skin and dark hair, with the tattoo placed at the right of the frame.

Dear Tomasz, the geckos came back last night, the big one and the small one that always seems to be following it. I watched them from the bath with the window open and the traffic going up and down Stokes Croft like something breathing. They stuck to the outside of the glass as if it were nothing, tails flicking over the sill, and I thought of you saying lizards in Lisbon were lucky while the ones in Bristol were just pests the landlord ignored.

You never answered about the flat. Mrs Okafor downstairs says the new people want the back room and she won't hold it past the first. I have been sorting your boxes into rubbish and keep, and I found the cardboard tube with the harbour drawings you made when you were fourteen, the ones where every gull looks furious. I sat on the stairs with them for an hour and laughed until the neighbour knocked on the wall.

I keep thinking about how you always said the pair of them were a couple who had given up arguing. The small one stayed on the wall while the big one climbed off, curled its tail and dropped out of the light, and I still do not know which of them was the one leaving. I am not asking you to choose anything. I only want you to know where the lamp is and that the tube is on the bottom shelf.

The lower one slid under the frame just before midnight. The top one stayed where it was, pressed flat against the glass, and I left the window open a crack in case you come up the road and want to know which of us is still here.
