Tribal back tattoo with hands behind head

Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A rear view of a person with both hands behind their head, showing a large black tribal design across the upper back, shoulders and down both sides of the spine. Bold black linework with solid fills and swirling blade-like forms, with a fine spider web on one shoulder blade. A star of David sits on the upper arm, and a faded tattoo is visible on the other arm; the background is a pale, out-of-focus building.

The rain has been coming sideways across the market since six, and by ten you have given up trying to keep the umbrellas dry. Your stall sits under the iron awning of the covered market at Hartwell, where the tarpaulins sag and drip onto the pavement in a steady, unhurried rhythm. Old Nkemdi from the fishmonger's two stalls down has already sent his boy for a flask of tea, and you have two frames on the bench that need their ribs straightened before lunch.

The umbrella that matters came in on Tuesday, folded tight in a carrier bag, its spokes bent like a fan someone had sat on. The owner did not wait for it to be fixed. She said only that it had been her father's, and that she would come back for it when the weather turned. You hammer the bent rib flat on the anvil, slowly, feeling each blade of steel come true under the tap of the mallet, and you think about the way she held the handle, as if it might still open.

Near the end of the afternoon the rain thins to a mist. A spider has strung a web between the corner of the awning and the coat hook, and it catches the grey light in beads. You leave it alone. The woman returns at four, looks at the umbrella, and opens it under the awning. The canopy snaps taut with a sound like a struck bell.

She pays with coins, not notes, and asks what she owes. You tell her nothing. The rain beads on the black fabric and rolls off in one clean sweep, and for a moment the wet spokes look like something cut into stone, something that has always been there.
