Tribal spiral design down a back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a person's bare back, showing a large tribal-style tattoo of flowing lines and spirals that runs from the upper back down the spine. The linework is bold and solid black, with curling terminals and tapering strokes that follow the contours of the shoulder blades. The image is monochrome, and the composition is tightly framed on the back with the head and hair cropped at the top.

Nan Ivo swept the quay every night before the bells, though nobody had paid her to since the herring left. She used a broom of birch twigs and swept in a spiral, starting at the iron ring by the fish market and working inward, so the wet stone kept a curl of silver that the gulls would not cross.

Her son Tobiah had gone out on the Marigold in November, and the harbour master said the sea had taken the boat whole. Ivo did not believe it. A woman who knew the tides, she said, knew that water always turns back on itself somewhere, and a boat that has lost its road will follow the last line it was shown.
Through February she kept at it. The lamplighter, a thin man called Osric Pell, began leaving his lamp at the foot of the steps so she could see her lines. Some nights fog came in thick off the Dun and the spirals blurred before she reached the last turn. Other nights the wind dragged the marks straight, and she stood there with her broom, cursing the weather in the old tongue.
On the first warm night of March a bell rang from the water, not the harbour bell but a small hand bell rung by someone who could not stop. Ivo followed the sound along the wall. Tobiah stood on the bottom step with his boots full of seawater, a coil of rope over one shoulder, and he said, Mam, you've been sweeping the wrong way round. Ivo said nothing. She turned the broom and began again, widdershins now, so he would know which road was home.
