Black ink flash drawing of two flowing goldfish with scale detail and a fine geometric hexagon outline, a design suited to a tattoo, shown without a body placement.

Two goldfish with geometric linework

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

Two goldfish with long, flowing fins face and curve around one another on a white background. The fish are drawn with fine hatching and stippled scale patterns in dark ink, with soft shading along the fins and bodies. A thin hexagon and a dotted vertical line overlap the fish, adding a geometric structure to the composition.

Dear Tom,

The goldfish are still going round. I took the two from Mrs Pryce's bowl when she went to her sister's in Merthyr, and they've been in the scullery jar since Tuesday, nosing each other like they have something to settle. The big one with the veil fins keeps his back to the window. The little one circles him, always half a length behind, and I've started to think it's courting rather than fighting.

The overman came by on Thursday with his plumb line for the new shaft. He'd chalked a dotted line down the gable wall, straight as a sin, and driven a hexagon of nails into the lintel to check the square. Ivor says the ground under Number Four is wet and the timbers are groaning again. I told him to mind his own business, but I stood at the scullery sink for an hour after, watching the fish cut their slow loops through the water until the glass stopped looking like glass.

Ceri from the Co-op says the men will be on double shifts all month. Don't you dare take the late turn to save a shilling. I'll keep one of them in the jar until you're up, so you'll know which is which when you come home. The one that stays still is yours.

Yours, Nell
