Two hands clasped in fine line on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two hands reaching towards each other and interlocking at the fingers, drawn as a continuous thin black outline with no shading. It sits on the inner wrist and forearm of pale skin, with the design small and centred over the wrist crease. The background is a grey concrete floor, and the image is in full colour with the ink appearing as black lines on the skin.

Snow had sealed the Hollin Gap inn for three days, and Maud Pryce had given up pretending the kitchen fire needed her. Her brother Tom sat across the table with a deck of cards he kept shuffling without dealing. The lamp guttered each time the wind hit the shutters, and the innkeeper's boy had gone up to bed an hour since.

The stranger had come in at dusk on foot, carrying a hurdy-gurdy wrapped in sacking and no coat worth the name. He stood at the hearth with his fingers stretched toward the flames, and when Maud handed him a cup of mulled cider she saw his hands shook so badly the spoon chattered against the rim. He did not give his name. He said only that the road over the pass had closed behind him, and that he had walked down from the high farms because a woman at the last village had asked him to carry a message.
In the small hours a gust tore a slate from the roof, and the room went cold and black. Maud heard the stranger curse softly in the dark, then the scrape of a chair. She reached out without thinking and found his hand, cold as slate, and held on. He did not pull away. Neither of them spoke, and through the thin wall Tom's cards went quiet.
By morning the drifts had reached the sills. The stranger was gone, leaving the hurdy-gurdy on the bench and a folded paper under the cup. The message read: Tell the girl at Hollin the hands still meet at the gap. Maud read it twice, then pulled on her boots and went out into the white glare to look for footprints, though the snow had already filled them.
