Drooping rose stem on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single rose hangs downwards on a long, thin stem with two leaves along its length. The linework is delicate and even, in black ink with no visible shading, and the design sits on the forearm against blue denim jeans. The plain pale background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The greenhouse glass had gone milky with a winter's grime, and Harriet Vane spent the first hour of the thaw scraping it with a butter knife while her brother argued with the gardener about the price of bone meal. Nobody had watered the Lady Hillingdon since August. The bush by the south wall had shed its leaves in a brown tide, and the only rose left standing was a single bloom on a stem so long and thin it looked like a question nobody wanted to answer.

Harriet had expected it to be dead. She had expected a lot of things about the house since her mother's funeral, most of which had turned out to be wrong. She cut the stem at the node, as her mother used to, and carried it inside to the kitchen sink. The bloom hung head-down from her fingers, heavy and blackened at the petal edges, but when she turned it under the tap the heart of it was still green.
She found the old pencil drawing in the bread drawer that evening, tucked under a bundle of seed packets. Her mother had sketched the same stem a dozen times in the margins of the garden almanac, always with the bloom bowed low, always with two leaves and never three. Harriet pinned the cutting in a jam jar on the windowsill, set the drawing beside it, and waited for the light to change.
By morning the petals had lifted a fraction, like someone straightening after a long bend. Harriet went out into the wet grass with the secateurs and cut back the dead wood, leaving the one living cane and its drooping head, and she did not tell her brother what she had done.
