Fine line hands clasped on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line drawing of two hands joined together, one hand reaching towards the other, sits on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the outlines are drawn in black ink. The tattoo is centred on a pale forearm against a grey floor, with the wrist and hand cropped at the edges of the frame.

Dear Tomasz,

The big top came down at Pontypridd on Sunday. I stood in the mud where the ring had been and counted the guy-ropes out of habit, the way you used to count my hands before a catch. Thirty-two ropes. Nobody else was counting anything. The lorries had already gone.

You will want to know about the rigging. Mr Ashdown sold the lights to a school in Swindon, and the wire went to a scrap man who paid by weight and never asked about the rope. The horses went to a farm outside Hereford. Bettina kept the spangled dress, which she intends to be buried in, and she is not joking.

I kept the one thing. You remember the last night at Bristol, when the wind got under the canvas and the net sagged, and you came up out of the dark as sure as a swift and took my wrist before I could fall? You hung there with your whole weight on one arm while I reached down and you reached up, and neither of us let go until the riggers had us both. I have tried to draw it on the back of a programme and it always comes out wrong, all the fingers in a knot.

So I had it done the way it really was, one thin line with no shading, by a woman called Ellis on Gloucester Road who charged me nothing, which is the only thing this year that has been free. Write me back, even if it is only the number of ropes you found in your coat.
