A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The big top came down in pieces the summer the river flooded Harrow Lane, and nobody wanted the sawdust swept up before the last show. Mother said a circus is only a rumour that keeps moving, and once the lorries stop, the rumour goes stale. I was twelve, holding the ladder for Old Tobiah while he unhooked the trapeze rigging, and I kept glancing at the far field where a single hummingbird had come in off the hedge, hovering over the dead clover as though it had been sent to check on us.

It was no bigger than my thumb. Tobiah said they were built from the bones of a bee and a rumour of wind, and he would know, having worked the Carrigan fair for forty years before the sea air took his lungs. He called the bird a little traveller with no fixed address. Every afternoon after that, it came to the wooden tent-pegs where we had painted a stripe of red sugar water on a jam jar lid, and it drank without ever landing, its beak a long black needle, its wings blurring to nothing.

We left in September. Mother sold the striped caravan to a man from Doncaster who never once looked up. On the motorway I pressed my forehead to the glass and saw, for one flick of a second, something quick beside the verge, hanging in the air above a pale patch of meadow where the grass had been flattened by the last tent. I have followed that bird ever since, in every town that has a field and a bit of sugar water, and it has never once stayed.
