Two hummingbirds hover across the upper chest and shoulder, one facing left and one facing right towards the centre. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mule had stopped at the cairn again, and Teodora was already swearing at it in the voice her father used for bad weather. Above us the pass ran white to the saddle, and the wind came off the snow tasting of tin. I unwrapped the bread from its cloth and broke it in half, because my brother would not eat until I did.

Then the birds came. They always came to the cantuta bushes below the last switchback, where the flowers stayed red after everything else had given up. Two of them, bronze-green and quick, hung in the air as if someone had pinned them there. One dropped to the bush and the other followed, and for a moment the whole slope bled colour: violet on the wings, rose at the throat, and behind them the green of wet moss where the sun caught spray from the stream.

My grandmother said hummingbirds were the souls of people who had crossed the pass and not come back, and that they flew down to see whether the living had been kind to the mules. I repeated this to Teodora. She said our grandmother had also claimed the mule was a saint. We laughed until the larger bird came straight at my face, and I stopped, and it stopped, and we stayed there nose to beak like two people deciding something.

Teodora loaded the mule. I left the last crust on the stone. When we reached the far side the cloud had lifted, and I looked back once. The two of them were still there, turning over the crumbs in the sun, as if they were checking the bill.
