The last train to Ormskirk had been cancelled twice, so Priya stood under the canopy at Lime Street with a paper cup going cold in her hand and watched the departures board flicker like something trying to decide. Across the concourse a man in a green waxed jacket was folding a map into smaller and smaller squares, the way her grandfather used to fold letters he had already decided not to send.

She had meant to catch the 17:40 and be home before the rain. Instead she had spent forty minutes in the buffet arguing with herself about whether a delay counted as a sign. Her sister would have said yes. Her sister said yes to most things, usually while holding a pair of scissors.

When the board finally settled, the man was still there, and he was looking at her the way people look at a wall they have just noticed is painted. He crossed the concourse holding the folded map out in front of him like a ticket. "This is yours," he said. "It fell out of the timetable at the ticket barrier. Blue ink on the back, a list of names."

She unfolded it under the lamp. Along the margin, in pencil gone silver with handling, someone had written the places they had meant to go together: Dunwich, Kendal, a lighthouse in Anglesey with a question mark beside it. Her own handwriting. Eleven years old, from a summer she had forgotten she spent planning.

The train pulled in, unbothered, its doors sighing open. Priya folded the map once, then again, and did not put it in her pocket.
