Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small tattoo of two stacked lines of Thai script on the upper back, close to the shoulder blade. The lettering is fine and uniform, with even black or dark blue ink and no shading. The skin is lightly freckled, and a dark bra strap and a bed with white linens and gold decorations are visible in the soft background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mother's hands stayed in the bread when the boy said he was going again, and she did not look up. Snow had come early to the high farm that year and lay in blue drifts against the byre wall. Her son had his father's boots on, too big for him, with straw stuffed into the toes.

Every winter it went the same way. She would tell him the two things her own mother had told her: that a road is best walked often, so that it learns your feet, and that a road is best walked far, so that it forgets the ones who wait. He said he knew them. He had heard them since he could walk. He took the loaf and a twist of salt in a cloth and went down the track before the light came up.

Spring came and the cart was not in the yard. Summer came, and the swallows nested in the gatepost where she had nailed his old hat. In the second winter a carter climbed the hill with a letter in a hand she could not read, and a small blue stone wrapped in paper. The carter said the boy had sent it from a port where the market sold cloth from three countries, and had asked him to say the words back to her exactly.

She heard them in her cold kitchen, in her son's voice though the carter's mouth made them: often, and far. Then she unlatched the back gate, as she had every winter, and left it open for the snow to find its way in.
