Two lion cubs in a beaded heart
Black and grey · Flash
The design shows two cartoon lion cubs seated side by side, one facing the viewer and one turned away, within a large heart outline. A row of dots follows the inside edge of the heart and the cubs' limbs and tails overlap the border. The drawing uses clean black outlines with no shading or colour, shown on a pale, slightly folded sheet of paper.

The fair packed up on a Tuesday, and Eddie Marsh was still on his knees in the wet grass when he found the second cub. The first had come home with him in a carrier bag two nights before, stitched badly at one ear, a prize he had won by knocking down three tins with a rubber ball. Its partner had been lying under the coconut stall all week, face down, one paw sticking out as if it wanted to be noticed.

His sister said he was daft to keep them. Sharon had a flat above the chippy and no room for anything with a tail. 'They're a pair,' he told her, sitting them side by side on the windowsill so they faced the street. 'You don't split a pair.' Sharon rolled her eyes, but on the Thursday she found a string of wooden beads from the cake stall looped loosely around their shoulders, and she didn't mention it.
Eddie never learned who had strung the beads, only that the old woman who ran the candyfloss van had waved at him from her step that morning and said she'd been meaning to pass them on. Sharon swore the ring was lopsided and not a heart at all. Eddie tilted the sill and squinted until the gap between the cubs curved into something rounder, the wide-eyed one grinning as if it had known all along, the other turned half away with its tail curled over the edge.
By the end of summer the windowsill had a proper bead heart on it, a dozen beads missing and two more found in the gutter. Eddie left the sash open at night so the cubs could watch the street. The lions seemed content enough, which was more than the fair had ever managed for anybody.
