Cat-faced matryoshka doll with a mouse

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing shows a matryoshka doll with a cat's face, ears and whiskers, holding a small mouse inside a scalloped, decorative frame on its body. The work uses bold, even black outlines with minimal shading, and the frame and the doll's dress are filled with simple ornamental detail. The drawing is in black ink on cream paper with faint red underlying sketch lines, and a Micron pen lies across the right side.

You are the only woodturner left in the village who can hollow lime-wood so thin the lid closes without a click. Your grandmother taught you with a gouge and a bowl of pale shavings, and every winter the snow piles against the cottage door until the birches at the forest edge vanish into grey.

Mirela from the mill orders a set of five for her daughter's name day and insists the topmost doll wear a cat's face, ears pricked, whiskers fine as thread. You grumble but carve it. Inside the cat's round belly you leave a small room, and in it you place a mouse no bigger than a barley grain, one paw lifted toward the scalloped lace frame you have cut on the outside, curling like frost on a windowpane.

The mill cat has been gone since October, and Mirela says the mice have returned to the flour. Each night you tap the doll shut and listen for the click that means it has sealed. On the fifth night the click does not come. When you open the cat, the mouse is gone from its room, and the dust on your bench is printed with tiny feet leading to the gap under the door and out toward the birches.

You set the cat on the sill with the lamp turned low and wait. Near dawn something scratches softly at the frame from outside, and you do not get up. At first light the cat stands on the sill with its painted paws curled round nothing at all, and in the snow below the window a line of small prints ends at the birch roots, where something has decided to stay.
