It was an owl, a barn owl with a face like a dished plate, sitting perfectly still on the rusted box. Beside it lay a tin heart no bigger than her palm, its edge punched with tiny beads, its front engraved with curling scrolls that caught the light like frost. The owl did not fly when she climbed down. It only turned its head, slow as a clock hand, and looked at her with one dark eye and then the other.

She knew the heart. Her mother had kept a trinket box with one just like it, and it had gone missing the week her mother left for the coast and never sent word. Juniper had assumed the desert had swallowed it along with her.

The owl lifted, not far, only to the top of the fence post, and waited. She picked up the tin. Inside, folded small, was a postcard of a lighthouse and a single line in pencil: Tell her the road is open. Juniper laughed until she was crying, and the owl, unimpressed, went back to watching the dark.
