Two outlined hands reaching on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line drawing of two hands shows one hand reaching down from above and a second hand held palm up beneath it. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the fingers and nails are described with simple contour lines. The pale skin and plain white background keep the focus on the black outline across the middle of the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last lights were being unhooked from the Waltzer when Nan lowered herself onto the step of the palm booth and told me to stop fiddling with the velvet cloth. Her knees had given up somewhere between Hartlepool and Stockton, and nobody on the fair had the nerve to say so to her face. Dad had the generator ticking over behind the caravans, and the smell of frying onions drifted across the car park from the burger van.

My job was the tin and the lamp. Nan read palms for a penny, or two pence if the customer wanted the long version, and every hand that came through the flap reached down onto the table the way people do when they're hoping to be told something kind. Then they turned it over to show her the soft middle. Nan never looked at the lines first. She looked at the palm, held it a while, and only then traced the creases with one thumbnail, as if she were reading a map she'd drawn herself.

That Saturday a man called Ashdown came in with a bandage wrapped round his right hand from the wrist down. He didn't want a reading. He just set the hand down, palm up, and waited. Nan took it in both of hers and said nothing at all for so long I started counting the bulbs on the sign outside. Then she told him the fair would pack up on Monday whether he was ready or not, and he laughed, and paid his penny into my tin anyway.

After he'd gone Nan held out her own hand, palm down, and I understood she wanted me to take it. Her skin was thin as tissue and cool from the night air. I slid my hand beneath hers, careful as anything, and she let her weight come down into my palm bit by bit until she was steady enough to stand. She didn't ask me to read anything. She just needed somewhere to rest, and I was the one holding it.
