Single line figure on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised human figure drawn as one continuous black line, with a raised hand at the top and a bent arm curving down to the left. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, so the skin shows through the open shapes. The ink is black on pale skin, set against a dark background and a white sleeve at the right edge.

The fog came in off Polwenna before the tide had turned, and Edwin Pascoe was still halfway up the harbour steps with lamp oil slopping against his shin. Below him the Mary Ellen was feeling her way in blind, her bell silent since noon because the clapper had cracked on the rocks. Someone had to be seen from the wall. He set the can down on the cold stone and raised his right hand, palm out, the way his father had taught him at eleven: stand, wait, come on.

He held it there until his shoulder burned. Out in the grey a voice called back, thin and uncertain, then a second voice, and a dark bow nudged out of the murk toward the gap in the breakwater. Edwin lowered his arm slowly, testing the joint, and felt the old ache settle into the elbow where the cold always found it. His wife had said he would wear the signal out before the boats gave up on it. She had been right about most things, including the pilchard price and the weather.

When the Mary Ellen's lamp finally slid past the stone and into the lee, he counted the crew up the steps and then counted them again, the way his father had done. Nine. Nine, and a boy with a crate of mackerel who tipped his cap at the wall. Edwin lifted his hand one last time, not to signal this time but to say that he had seen them.
