Mountain peaks on the wrist
Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small range of jagged mountain peaks is tattooed across the back of a wrist, with the summits rising to the left and right of a central peak. The linework is fine and angular, and the shading uses soft grey gradients and stippled texture to give the peaks depth. The design is in black and grey ink and sits against a plain black background, with the hand relaxed and curled below it.

Dear Ruth, The range came up out of the cloud on Tuesday, exactly where Mr Hallam said it would, and I have spent three evenings trying to draw it the way it looked. Three bright peaks in a row with the middle one just higher than the rest, shoulders falling away grey on either side where the snow had gone off the rock. Hallam wants it in pen. I keep reaching for the pencil.

He sent me up the track with a theodolite that sticks at the third reading and a flask of cold tea. The ground was all scree and sheep dung. By noon the cloud had lifted off the summits and I could see a dark line where the light stopped and the shadow began, sharp at the top, going soft as it ran down the flanks. That softness is the thing I cannot get on paper. Hallam says a surveyor draws edges. I think he is wrong, but I have not told him so.
Coming down I passed a woman at the stile with a dog and a crate of eggs. She asked what I was measuring. I said the height of the middle one, and she laughed and said everyone wanted that and nobody ever agreed on it. Then she told me the old name for it, which is not on any chart in the office, so I wrote it in the back of my notebook under the bearings.
I am posting you the sheet tomorrow, with the old name pencilled in the corner. Keep it flat in a book. When the ink goes pale in a few years, you will know which peak to look for. Love, Ada
