Two purple butterflies design

Colour · Flash

The image shows two stylised butterflies, one large and one smaller, with thick black outlines and curled antennae. Their wings are filled with flat purple ink, with small motion marks beside the wings. The plain beige background and open composition suggest a tattoo design sheet rather than a photograph of skin.

Brother Anselm kept the bees at the top of the orchard, where the wall of Saint Ebba's met the scree. Every spring the novices asked him why the monastery grew no roses, only the blue herbs and the one crooked pear, and every spring he sent them back to the cloister with a question instead of an answer.

The year the abbot's nephew came up the mountain with a bad cough and a worse temper, a violet butterfly settled on the boy's sleeve at the gate. It was large, with black lines drawn round its wings as firm as a scribe's ink, and it had curled feelers that bent back on themselves like question marks. The boy laughed for the first time in a week. Anselm watched him laugh and thought nothing of it.

Then a smaller one came, no bigger than a thumbnail, and it flew in circles around the first, touching its wingtip and darting off again. The boy followed them through the orchard for three days. On the third morning he was gone, and the abbot sent word that he had gone down the mountain with a cart and a clean cough.

Brother Anselm still keeps the bees. When the novices ask him what the purple pair meant, he says only that the large one had somewhere to be, and the small one would not let it go without a last look back.
