Single line dragonfly with lotus flower

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A dragonfly is drawn in one unbroken black line, with four long elongated wings spread across the frame and a tail curving down to the lower left. A small lotus bloom with curled petals sits where the head would be, and the line thickness stays consistent throughout. The design is in black ink only on a plain white background, with open space around the subject.

Dear Ruth,

The pond finally cleared this morning, and I stood at the edge with my boots soaking through and watched the dragonflies work the surface like they were stitching it shut. Dad would have grumbled about the state of the liner. He would also have pretended not to care when the lily opened, which it did at ten past eight, all at once, the way he always said they did when nobody was watching.

Mrs Okafor from number nine came round with a jar of blackcurrant jam and asked whether the long-tailed one had come back. I told her it had. She said her husband used to call them helicopters, and she laughed so hard she had to sit on the bench by the shed. I didn't tell her I had been counting them for three weeks, or that I stopped counting the day the bloom came, because it felt greedy to keep score of something so careless with its time.

The drawing you asked about is still on the workbench. He sketched it on the back of an electricity bill the spring before he went into hospital, one wobbly line that loops and doubles back until it becomes wings, a stem, and a small flower where the head should be. I kept meaning to frame it. Last night I pinned it to the shed door instead, where the wind keeps lifting one corner, and I think that is what he would have wanted.

Come and see it before the frost. Bring your good secateurs. The lily will last until October if we leave it alone, and I have decided we are going to leave it alone.

Love, Marion
