Two reaching hands on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two hands reaching towards each other, one from each side, with the fingertips almost meeting in the centre. The linework is fine and the forms are softened with grey shading, giving the hands a sculpted, realistic look. The design is small and sits horizontally across the forearm against plain pale skin, with a notebook visible at the edge of the frame.

Dear Nell, the boards creaked all morning and I thought of you the whole time, the way I always do when a job is nearly finished and won't quite finish. Mr Parry has us on the north bay now, the stretch above the lectern where the damp got in during the wet winter. Yesterday I lifted the grime off a long painted hand hanging out of a cloud, knuckles pulled tight, reaching down across the air towards another hand that comes up to meet it from the far side. The fingertips don't touch. The gap between them is no wider than a fingernail, and I have spent a week looking at it from my perch.

The lads want to fill it. The old paint has flaked away in a crescent there, so they say the plaster needs making good, and Parry would have it level by Friday. I told them to leave it. He came up the ladder himself, squinted for a good while, and said nothing at all, which from him is as good as a sermon. Then he climbed down and told me the painter had left the space on purpose, because a hand that touches everything has nothing left to want.
I don't know if I believe that, but I've been turning it over with my tea on the tea-chest. I traced both hands onto the back of a dockets sheet this morning, the gap included, and I'm enclosing it so you can see how small the distance really is. Come on Sunday if your mother can spare you. Bring the good scissors and a pear, and I'll show you exactly where I'd put my finger if I were allowed.
