Pair of outline wings on a wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of two separate wings sits on the back of a wrist, one wing curling upward and the other angled to the right. The linework is thin, even and solid black, with the feather tips drawn in simple scalloped edges and spiral curls at the base. The image is a close, well-lit colour photograph with no shading, and the only other colour is a silver ring on a finger.

The gulls had been at the washing again, so Mrs Penrose sent the girl down to the harbour wall with a broom and a bad temper. Down on the stones, between the lobster pots and a dead crab, lay a pair of wings no bigger than a kipper's tail. They were grey-white and they were not moving, and the girl thought at first they were the sea's rubbish until she saw the curl at the root of each one, tight as a fern.

She carried them home in her apron. Mrs Penrose said nothing for a long while, then put the kettle on and told her that wings found on a shore were owed to the house that found them, and that a house with a debt must keep it. So the girl kept them in a tin on the windowsill above the sink, where the light came through the salt-clouded glass and turned the feathers almost to ink.
The boarding house had one guest that winter, a man who walked the cliff path each morning and came back with his shoes full of mud. He did not notice the tin. But in February the wings were gone, and in their place, on the sill, sat a single black feather with a scalloped edge, and beside it a small curled shaving of sea-glass. The girl put her hand to her wrist and found it warm. Mrs Penrose only nodded, as if the house had paid what it owed.
