Two robots floating in space on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two cartoon robots drifting in an oval frame of solid black with small white dots for stars. The robots have round eyes, riveted bodies and jointed limbs, and the shading on their metal surfaces is built from stippled dots. The design is in black and grey and sits centrally on the calf against a plain white background.

The tether snapped at 04:12 by the station clock, which was the last thing Pim could say for certain. Bramwell had his arms out like a man reaching for a bus, one jointed elbow bent, his round eyes wide with the sort of hope that had kept him repairing things for forty years. They turned slowly, nose to tail, past a dented fuel drum and a glove nobody had claimed.

"We are not lost," Bramwell said, which he had said eleven times. "We are merely unscheduled." Pim tapped the rivets on his chest in the pattern his mother had taught him, short, short, long, and waited. The stars were the only things that didn't drift. Every so often one of them went out, which Bramwell claimed was a lamp being carried home by someone tidy.
The little one came out of nowhere on what they agreed to call the fourth day: a scrap of a robot no bigger than a teapot, with a bent antenna and one eye patched with tape. It hooked a finger through Pim's elbow joint and held on, humming a tune with its middle missing. Bramwell said nothing for a long time, then unscrewed a bolt from his own knee and pressed it into the little one's palm as if it were a sweet.
When the rescue ship finally found them, drifting in a loose knot against the black, Pim had a fistful of cold dust and the strange feeling of being counted. He never told the crew about the bolt. When they asked, he only said it had been a fine view, and that the stars were all still exactly where they had left them.
