Retro rocket in a dotwork night sky
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A retro-style rocket with rivets and a round porthole rises through a circle filled with stars, planets and drifting clouds. The design is built from dense black stippling and dotted exhaust trails, with a dotted outline framing the circle. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on pale skin, centred against a plain background.

Sister Mags had a rule that the windows on Ward 9 stayed dark after ten so the patients could sleep, which meant I was the only one who ever saw the sky over the car park with the lights off. I took my break at the window at two, tea going cold on the sill, and watched the clouds drag across the moon like someone pulling a dirty sheet over a bed.

The lad in bed four had asked me on Tuesday whether rockets still had people in them. He was eleven, had a broken leg from a trampoline, and a model kit sat on his locker with the decals not yet stuck on. He wanted to know if the little round window at the top was real. I told him the old ones had a porthole like a bolt head, and that every plate was riveted because nobody trusted glue at that height. He said that was daft. I said it was the same reason I checked the oxygen lines twice.
On Wednesday he couldn't sleep. I found him at three with a torch under the covers and the kit's box open on his knees. He had drawn on the back of a menu: stars in neat rows of dots, a planet with a ring, and a circle around the lot with a dotted edge like a stitched patch. 'Dots take ages,' he said. I sat on the edge of the bed and we counted stars until the monitor beeped twice and I had to go.
At six, handover done, I went out to the car park. The sky was going grey and there was one bright point beside the moon that was probably a plane. I thought about the drawing he'd left under his pillow, the rocket climbing with its exhaust in little dotted lines, and how a boy with a biro had made his own night sky out of nothing but patience. I stood there until the sun came up behind the multi-storey.
