The pass had been shut since Tuesday, and by Thursday Nell had counted the same forty-one diamonds in the parlour window so often she could have drawn them blind. Her father said the leaded panes were older than the inn, though the inn was old enough that nobody in Fellgate would argue. Mrs Ansell, who had kept the house since her husband's funeral, brought a biscuit tin down from the top of the dresser. Inside were coils of old lead came, like ribbon left too long in a drawer, and a folded card with a pencil sketch: two roses on long stems, their leaves layered like feathers, and above them a diamond drawn in lines so fine they looked like frost. "Your grandfather made that the year we married," she said. "He said a window ought to have something growing in it, or it's only a hole with ideas." Nell had never heard her speak of him.

Her father cut the new diamonds that night by lamplight while Nell held the lead steady and the wind kept shoving at the glass. He did not look up once, but he let her solder the last joint herself, and the tin went cold on the sill beside her elbow.

In the morning the frost had grown over the repaired row in a pattern of petals. Mrs Ansell came in with the kettle, stopped, and ran one finger through the frost along a curving stem. Where her finger passed, the glass went clear, and the sun came through in a small bright shape that fell across the floorboards.
