Geometric diamond with cube on the ribs
Geometric · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black line tattoo shows a diamond outline with an inner geometric design of overlapping cubes and triangles. The lines are uniform and solid, with no shading, and the design sits centrally on bare skin at the side of the torso. The black and white photograph is framed close, with long wavy hair visible at the right edge.

Sit closer, the lamp is nearly out and the story is longer than the oil. My father cut stone at the quarry above Tarsa, where the hills go white in summer, and he used to say a block was honest only when you could see the cube sleeping inside it. Nobody believed him until the winter the master mason Demetri came up the track with a diamond of bronze wire, a thing he had bent himself, and set it on the flat rock between them.

Demetri wanted a lintel for the temple at the coast, and the priests had sent word that the stone must hold a shape no one had yet carved. So they worked for forty days. Each morning my father struck a line, and each evening Demetri folded the wire tighter, until a diamond stood on its point and inside it three cubes leaned together like men sharing a cloak against rain, their corners joined by triangles no wider than a fingernail.
On the forty-first day the wire snapped. Demetri swore, and my father went quiet, because he had seen what the broken wire had shown them: the cubes did not sit side by side at all but turned, one into the other, so the eye could not decide which face was near. Demetri laughed until he wept and said the priests would call it a trick. My father said nothing. He only picked up his chisel and cut the line the wire had shown him, straight and black as a crow's wing against the pale stone.
The lintel went to the coast. Nobody living has seen it since the sea took the temple. But the stone we cut that day is still on the hill, and if you climb there at dawn you will see the shadow of a diamond falling across the rock, and inside it the cubes still turning, deciding nothing.
