Mandala armband tattoo on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey mandala tattoo wraps the inner forearm, with a band of layered petals and leaves at the top that narrows into a diamond-shaped drop, a small dot, and a smaller ornamental drop below. The linework is clean and the petals are shaded with fine stippled dots, giving depth and texture. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a plain light skin tone and a dark background, with a sleeve visible at the top and dark denim at the right edge.

Dear Maud, the tide came up the slipway again on Tuesday and took the lobster pots we'd stacked against the wall, so you'll not be surprised to hear the harbour is a mess of rope and weed. Mr Tully from the co-op says the Sea Lily will go out on Thursday regardless, and I have told him he may take my share of the catch if he wants to be the one who explains to Ellen why her father came home with nothing.

I went up the cliff path on Sunday with the good scissors and the tin of buttons, meaning to tidy the garden, and found instead the old boathouse door standing open. Inside, your father's brass compass was lying on the bench where he left it in March, its face furred with salt, and the needle still swung to north as if nothing had happened. I sat with it a long while. There is a strange pattern of rings pressed into the dust around it, circles inside circles, petals of dried kelp arranged in a crown. I have no idea who made it, but I left it be, the way you'd leave a sleeping cat.
When I walked down again the light was going pink and gold over the water, and the gulls had gathered in rows along the mooring posts. I counted them, twelve on each side, and then I stopped counting and simply watched them turn together like a single hinged thing. Your father always said the sea gives back what it means to keep. I think it is only waiting for us to notice the right shape of the gift.
Come home at Easter if the trains allow. Bring your sketchbook. Ellen has asked whether the compass will tell her the way to you, and I haven't the heart to say it only ever points at the pole.
All my love, Edie
