Black and grey roses on the wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of three roses with buds and leaves is tattooed on the inner wrist and lower forearm, with the hand visible below. The roses are rendered in black ink with fine shading that gives the petals depth and texture. The design is set against pale skin and a dark striped fabric, with the tattoo placed centrally in the frame.

You take the night shift at Vell's flower arches because the pay is cash and nobody asks where you were before. Your work is stripping thorns and wrapping stems before the vans come down from the coast. At three in the morning the arches smell of wet cardboard and diesel, and under that, the green sharpness of cut stems. The roses arrive with their heads heavy and their petals bruised dark at the edges, like old engravings left too long in a damp drawer.

Ada runs the stall and keeps a sketchbook of roses she has never sold. She draws them in pencil, shading each petal until it seems to curl away from the page. "Ink is only honest," she tells you, tapping a drawing of three blooms with a bud above them, "when you can still see the veins under the shadow." She gives you a cutting from a rose that opened too early and tells you to press it between the pages of a catalogue, where it will keep its colour a while longer.
The van is late on the morning the gate is due to lock. You search the sketchbook and find the page with the three roses gone, only a torn edge left in the spine. Ada doesn't look up from the till. She nods across the street, where the tailor has pinned a sheet of drawings among the bolts of pinstripe cloth, and there it is, the cluster of roses in the window, leaves and buds exactly where she left them.
You stand on the wet pavement with the pressed rose in your palm. Behind you the first van pulls in, its headlights sweeping the arches, and you realise the drawing has been waiting there all night for someone to notice it. You go back inside and begin to unload.
