Two roses on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo of two open roses with layered petals and curled leaves sits on the front of a thigh, with the wearer in denim shorts above. The design uses dark outlines with fine stippled dotwork shading across the petals and leaves, and a few scattered speckles around the edges. The image is in black and grey, with the roses centred on the leg and the background softly out of focus.

The ovens had been going since half three, and Hannah Price had already burned one tray of brioche by thinking about her brother's wedding. She pulled the second tray out with a folded cloth and set it on the rack to cool, the crust crackling like wet paper.

Outside the back window the sky over the car park was still the colour of ash. She took the bowl of rosewater icing from the fridge and began on the order that had come in at midnight, a dozen cakes for the Allotment Society, each with two open roses piped in buttercream. Her mother had taught her to shade petals with the flat of a knife, pressing lightly so the cream held a ridge of shadow. Every rose needed the stippling too: tiny dots of cocoa pushed through a sieve, so the white turned grey at the edges like an old photograph.
The last cake was for Mr Okafor's late wife, who had grown roses along the fence behind the bakery for thirty years. He had ordered it in pencil on the back of a seed packet. Hannah hadn't known what to make of that until she piped the second bloom, which sat a little lower than the first, the way the two of them had leaned together on his allotment gate every Saturday.
When the sun came up, she had dusted the last speckles around the border. Mr Okafor collected the box at seven, lifted the lid, and said nothing. He nodded, then touched the lower rose with one finger, leaving a small clean print in the cocoa dust.
