Black and grey rose with geometric diamond on forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey rose with dotwork shading and layered petals sits at the top of the design, with dark leaves on either side. Below it, thin geometric lines form a diamond and nested triangles, with dotted edges along the lower points. The tattoo is shown in sharp focus on a pale forearm against a dark background, with the ink cleanly defined.

You find Maureen by the hatch where the tuck shop used to be, the committee has pinned paper stars along the sports hall wall, and she is tracing a diamond onto a name badge with her thumbnail, the same slow way she used to trace the compass rose on the geography room map when Mr Platt had his back turned. Her plastic cup of warm prosecco has gone flat. You have not seen her in twenty-six years, and still she does not look up until you say her surname.

"You still owe me a protractor," she says. "Fourth year. You took it home and it came back with a dent in it." You laugh, and she does not, quite. She turns the badge over. Under the printed name she has drawn a small rose in biro, dots for shading, the petals stacked like folded paper, leaves crowding its base, and below it a line of nested triangles that end in a single dotted point.

"Every lunchtime I did those dots instead of eating," she says. "Mum said I'd go blind. I never went to art college because the diamond was the only thing I could finish. You start at the middle and work outwards, and the points look after themselves."

She presses the badge into your palm. The hall lights dip for the disco and the paper stars catch them, and you pin the badge to your coat, rose uppermost, the diamond pointing down toward the last of the drink.
