Two roses on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two roses, one partly overlapping the other, with shaded petals and leaves drawn in outline and soft grey tones. It sits on the outer hip and upper thigh of a person whose face and upper body are cropped out of the frame. The ink is entirely black and grey against warm skin, with a black dress and bracelets in the background.

Dear Tom,

The roses came up at the market this morning, a whole barrow of them, stuck in buckets outside the fish shed because Mr Pryce had over-ordered from the hothouse at Bridlington. Nobody wanted them. Mum said they'd only drop petals on the cod, so I bought the lot for a shilling and carried them home on the bus with the water slopping over my good shoes. You'd have laughed. Two of them I've pressed between the pages of the almanac, the darker one and a paler one that's already gone the colour of weak tea.

The boats came in late on Tuesday with the Maggie Rose riding low and the wind in the rigging like a kettle. Dad's not talking about the net that tore, but he sat on the step of the shed for an hour after with his hands hanging between his knees. I brought him tea and he didn't drink it. Gran says the sea keeps a tally and it's never wrong, only late. I told her she should take it up with the sea, and she swatted my arm with the tea towel.

Here is the thing I meant to write. When you left, you said you'd carve our initials into the wheelhouse beam so the gulls would know whose boat it was. I checked on Sunday. There's nothing there but a scratch that might be a T and might be a splinter. So I'm sending you the roses instead. Tuck one in your cap band or tell the cook they're a present from me. Keep the other one dry. Come back and tell me which one has the better petals.

Love, Ellie
