Black and grey rose sleeve on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large sleeve of roses covers the forearm, with shaded petals and leaves in black and grey. The rose work is detailed and fades into softer mottled shading toward the wrist, where a gold watch sits over the skin. A smaller ornamental mandala tattoo is visible on the upper arm at the top right of the frame.

Mrs Okonedo had grown roses in the same glasshouse outside Spalding for thirty-one years, and in all that time she had never let anyone graft onto her best stock but her brother Tomasz. He was late that March. The frost had got into the north range and the bud-wood was going soft in its wrapping, so when the van finally pulled into the yard it was Ruth, not Tomasz, who climbed out, carrying a gold watch in a biscuit tin with a face that said she had already been argued with.

"He sold it to pay for the fuel," Ruth said. "Said you'd know what to do with a thing that ticks."
Mrs Okonedo took the tin, turned the watch over and found the back engraved with nothing but a date. She set it on the potting bench between a tray of Albas and the grafting ledger. "Then we'll keep time with it," she said, and took up the knife.
They worked until the light went orange through the glass. Each bud was slid beneath the bark, bound with raffia and sealed with wax the colour of old brass. Ruth counted the seconds between ticks while Mrs Okonedo's hands moved without hurry. By dusk there were forty new unions, and the watch had stopped at a quarter to six, which Mrs Okonedo wrote in the ledger beside the forty, as if it were simply another yield.
