Treble clef on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small treble clef is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown in a black and grey photograph with the hand raised at the top of the frame. The clef is drawn in a single thin black outline with an even, delicate line weight and no shading. The plain light background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the surrounding skin.

The piano had been lashed to the deck since Valparaíso, under a tarpaulin that snapped in the trade winds like a sail with a grievance. Hannah Quill checked the ropes every morning before the galley fire was lit, because Captain Olsson said a loose instrument on a mid-Atlantic swell was worse than a loose cannon, and he had once seen a cannon go through a bulkhead.

On the thirty-first day the sea went flat as slate and the sky turned the colour of dishwater. Hannah sat on the hatch cover with the tarpaulin folded in her lap and worked the wire loops loose one at a time. Behind her, Tomasz the cook was whistling something through his teeth, badly, the same four bars over and over. She could not stand it. She reached past him, took the cracked tin whistle from the rail where he kept it, and played the tune properly, the way her grandmother had taught her on the Lancashire kitchen table with a wooden spoon for a baton.

Tomasz stopped whistling. Olsson came up the companionway with his coffee and stood very still. Nobody spoke. Then a deckhand in the rigging began to hum the line in a low voice, and the cook corrected a note, and by the time the bell rang for supper the whole watch was singing under a sky that had no notion of weather.

The next morning Hannah found a small brass key taped to the lid of the piano case, with a note in Olsson's cramped hand: Tune it before Cape Horn. She laughed out loud at that, alone on the wet deck, and went to fetch the tuning fork.
