Two small snowflakes on a wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two small snowflake tattoos sit side by side on the inner wrist, each drawn with thin black linework and six-armed branching symmetry. The lines are crisp and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The photo is taken close up from a slight angle, with a soft blurred background and a white sheet beneath the arm.

Eleven years ago he taught me that no two snowflakes are alike, which is something everybody says and nobody checks. We caught them on the black wool of his good coat, one on each cuff, and he held his magnifier over them the way a jeweller holds a stone. Six arms each. He said the cold builds them one branch at a time, and every branch meets the same weather, so they come out matched. I thought that was the most romantic thing a man had ever told me, and I was nine.

The letter from the council came on Tuesday. They want the old harbour office for a bait store. I told the young man with the clipboard that the snow gauge stays on the sill, and he laughed, then saw my face and wrote something down.

Tonight I sat by the window with the lamp off and watched the flakes slant through the sodium light over the fish market. Two of them landed on the sill, one beside the other, close enough to touch. I didn't brush them away until they had gone to water. Nobody else passing would have noticed they were a pair. I think he would have.
